The Red Couch
A Portrait of America
1984
United States, USA

The Red Couch: A Portrait of America was published by Harper & Row in 1984 after four years of travel. Kevin Clarke placed a red velvet couch in his New York studio and began to ask everyone — famous and unknown alike — to sit on it. The resulting book made Clarke's name worldwide and represented U.S. photography at the Rencontres d'Arles in 1985.
